Wagro Trading Sdn Bhd, incorporated on 25 July 2003 in Bintulu, Sarawak, has grown significantly under the leadership of managing director Lai Woon Wui after 17 years being based in Tawau, Sabah.
Over two decades, the company expanded its reach to Kuching, Miri, Batu Niah, Sibu, Mukah, and Selangor, becoming one of the largest agricultural trading houses in the region.
Wagro’s core business involves supplying agrochemicals, fertilisers, agricultural tools, and hardware to oil palm plantations, building strong relationships with local smallholders and cash crop farmers in Malaysia, striving to offer innovative and sustainable solutions for collective growth.
As a central hub for oil palm growers, Wagro collaborates with agronomists and principals to spread knowledge on cultivation.
However, the company is still working on addressing a number of challenges such as labour shortages, global competition, environmental issues, and climate change by introducing new technologies and concepts, providing field management knowledge to improve crop yields and differentiate itself in the market.
Wagro’s extensive network and steady growth have enabled it to provide consistent support to plantations of all sizes, particularly in pest and disease management amidst the rising demand for agricultural crop resources.
In recognition of its efforts, Wagro was honoured with the SME100 Award 2023: Malaysia’s Fast Moving Companies, boosting the company’s confidence and serves as a testament to the hard work of over one hundred employees.
It inspires Wagro to improve its products and services while maintaining its vision of becoming a leading provider of agrochemicals, fertilisers, and agricultural tools in Malaysia.
Wagro excels by fostering close collaborations with esteemed principals and cultivating strong ties with the local end-user market, staying true to its commitment towards delivering tailored solutions, addressing the unique needs of different plantations, and empowering local growers to achieve optimal yields.
To support business expansion, Wagro prioritises on upskilling its employees through relevant courses and consistently conducts market research, competitor analysis, and embraces innovation.
“When faced with challenges, we adapt swiftly, adjusting strategies for efficient problem-solving, recognising the importance of agility in the fast- evolving industry,” said Lai.
After celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2023, Wagro attributes its success to the collective efforts of its dedicated staff.
