U Mobile has teamed up with Qualcomm and The Food Merchant (TFM), Malaysia’s premier international premium grocer with a selection of over 250 international brands, to initiate a proof-of-concept (PoC) at the TFM store located at Pavilion Embassy, Jalan Ampang, showcasing the TROLLEE P1 smart retail solution for shopping carts. The PoC is presently underway and will be available for a limited time.
The TROLLEE P1 solution empowers shoppers to easily search for products by categories and recommendations by simply entering the product name they are seeking. To save time, shoppers can utilize TROLLEE P1’s navigation feature to locate products within the store.
Additionally, shoppers can manage their shopping lists and budgets by scanning products with the device before placing them into their cart. If any products are on promotion, promotional advertisements may appear on the screen when shoppers are in proximity to the product, thanks to TROLLEE P1’s highly accurate in-store positioning system.
The self-checkout feature in TROLLEE P1 offers a convenient, fast, and contactless payment experience, eliminating the need for shoppers to wait in line at the cashier.
Another innovative feature includes the use of augmented reality (AR) technology in campaigns, engaging shoppers with interactive games and activities, providing them with an immersive shopping experience.
For retailers, TROLLEE P1 offers an opportunity to bridge the gap between online and offline (O2O) customer journeys. The smart shopping cart’s proprietary hardware and software can capture data on shopper behaviors and preferences.
This data can be analyzed to enhance loyalty rewards programs, deliver targeted marketing content, and improve operational efficiency by providing real-time data through the TROLLEE Data Dashboard.
This smart retail PoC collaboration between U Mobile, Qualcomm, and The Food Merchant is particularly timely as Malaysia’s retail industry has shown positive growth, with Q1 2023 recording a better-than-expected 13.8% increase in retail sales compared to Q1 2022.
The global smart retail market is projected to be valued at USD $91.36 billion by 2030, indicating retailers’ interest in gaining deeper insights into customer behavior through digital transformation.
Alex Tan, chief sales officer of U Mobile, stated, “Our vision is to be Malaysia’s favorite digital services provider, and true to that ethos, we are always looking at how we can leverage digital innovations to enhance industries.
“With the Malaysian retail industry rebounding so reassuringly post-pandemic, we believe that this is the best time for U Mobile to provide our connectivity expertise to power technologies that elevate the supermarket shopping experience for Malaysians. Hence, we are delighted to partner with Qualcomm and The Food Merchant on this initiative, as the insights provided by their customers will be invaluable.”
Alex added that smart retail is just the beginning, and U Mobile is actively seeking partnerships with various industries to explore and implement digital solutions to contribute to Malaysia’s ambition of becoming a technology-based economy as outlined in the 12th Malaysia Plan.
Leong Pei Khim, The Food Merchant’s chief operating officer, highlighted their commitment to embracing technology to enhance the shopping experience. “From state-of-the-art checkout systems to augmented reality shopping experiences, we believe that embracing technology is essential to make seamless shopping easier, faster, and more enjoyable for our customers,” said Leong.
ST Liew, vice president of Qualcomm Technologies Inc and president of Qualcomm in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, commented, “At Qualcomm, we believe that the future of retail lies in the seamless integration of cutting-edge technology. Our smart retail solutions empower businesses to transcend traditional shopping experiences, creating dynamic environments where data-driven insights meet personalized interactions.
“By seamlessly integrating AI-driven smart retail solutions, we’re not only enhancing customer experiences but also catalyzing a broader digital transformation that’s redefining the business and connectivity landscape. The journey ahead is exciting, and we’re thrilled to see Malaysia’s retail industry and beyond embrace this intelligent evolution.”
