Volvo Buses, part of the Volvo Group and a leading provider of sustainable transport solutions, has partnered with Malaysia’s Gemilang International Ltd to launch the Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range. This flagship model is Volvo’s first locally-built, electric low-floor, two-door, premium city bus in Malaysia.
At the launch, a signing ceremony with Rapid Bus Sdn Bhd confirmed a trial operation involving the new electric bus for Rapid KL’s service. The trial, set to begin in July 2024, will run for six months to a year on Route 581, which covers the Desa Tasik – LRT Bandar Tasik Selatan trip.
The Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range combines Volvo’s European electromobility innovations with Gemilang’s local expertise in electric bus body manufacturing. The bus features an energy-efficient chassis and driveline components developed in Volvo’s Swedish plant, ensuring superior safety, efficiency, and emission-free city transport.
This electric bus supports Malaysia’s shift towards electric buses in major cities, starting with the Klang Valley. It aligns with Rapid Bus’ plan to electrify its fleet by 2030, aiming to decarbonize the public transport sector and reduce air pollution. The bus is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 60%, or approximately 329 kg of CO2 per passenger annually for every 15,000 km compared to a diesel bus.
Efficient Design and Operation
Built on the Volvo BZL 4×2 chassis, the GML Eco Range features a low, flat floor for greater passenger accessibility and stability. Its modular design allows customisation, reducing repair costs and downtime. The bus can hold up to 91 passengers, with a mix of 33 seated and 58 standing, depending on body length (10.6 to 12.5 meters).
The Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range meets stringent global safety standards, featuring advanced braking technologies such as Volvo disc brakes, Electronic Braking System (EBS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and more. Additional safety options include departure warning, collision warning, a 360-degree camera, and e-mirrors. The bus’s multilayer safety system exceeds European standards, ensuring maximum safety, especially in thermal management.
The electric bus offers flexible charging options, including OppCharge high-power charging and CCS charging sockets. Roof-mounted energy storage optimises passenger space and weight distribution. The bus is also equipped with a powerful climate control system, providing a comfortable ride with double-glazed glass panels for insulation against heat and noise.
Marcus Mak, Country Manager of Volvo Buses Malaysia, emphasised the significance of electromobility in creating a sustainable future. Pang Jun Jie, Executive Director of Gemilang International, highlighted the bus’s reliability and environmental performance, aligning with Malaysia’s goals to reduce carbon footprints and promote green mobility.
The Volvo BZL-GML Eco Range is set to revolutionise urban commuting in Malaysia, offering a high-quality, sustainable, and efficient transport solution for both passengers and drivers.
