The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech), a research institute of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the University of Leeds inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that aims to collaborate on the research & development of innovative medical devices.
The partnership will leverage on SIMTech’s core capabilities in manufacturing research to create chips, medical implants and implantable devices which include innovative joint replacements and biological scaffolds for cardiovascular and musculoskeletal tissue.
The collaboration with the University of Leeds will fill the gap between material and engineering research in order to translate research outcomes from the lab to manufacturing readiness. It will also boost the exchange of experience, knowledge and engagement of specialists.
Funding opportunities, shared use of facilities and academic collaboration will also be explored.
The medtech industry is a growing market for the local precision engineering and components manufacturers. The sector aims to achieve S$5B in manufacturing output by 2015.
