Nippon Paint (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd., in partnership with Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia (PAM) and Architect Centre, recently hosted the Forward Reinvent Seminar, themed Defeating Design Demons: Navigating the Unseen Challenges in Architecture.

The event attracted over 300 professionals, including developers, architects, quantity surveyors, and engineers, who gathered to explore solutions for common industry challenges and enhance the quality and sustainability of Malaysia’s built environment.

The seminar addressed frequent issues such as poor workmanship, subpar materials, and design flaws that often result in building defects. By sharing innovative techniques and best practices, participants aimed to minimise these problems, potentially saving the industry millions annually.

With Malaysia’s urban population expected to reach 80% by 2030, the need for improved construction methods to support rapid urbanisation is paramount.

Prominent speakers, including Ar. Ellina Rahman from DP Architects, Ar. Anthony Lee Tee from Architect Centre, and Ester Goh, Senior Manager of Nippon Paint’s Project Division, offered insights into the key challenges and solutions within the architecture and construction sectors.

Ellina emphasised the complexities of balancing material limitations, compliance codes, and fluctuating client expectations, stressing the importance of foresight and collaboration with contractors to maintain building integrity.

Meanwhile, Anthony highlighted the need to prioritise root-cause solutions, such as proper waterproofing and material science, to prevent costly repairs later on.

A major focus of the seminar was on refurbishment projects, where existing systems often require upgrades to meet modern standards. Nippon Paint’s expertise in refurbishment, through its Total Coating & Construction Solutions (TCCS), has contributed to the successful restoration of various projects, including Sky Oasis Residence and Impiana Hotel.

Water intrusion, responsible for 40% of building-related issues, was also addressed, with Ester emphasising the importance of continuous waterproofing throughout the construction process to avoid costly disputes and legal complications.

Nippon Paint’s comprehensive approach to building protection, including solutions like anti-efflorescence and thermal shock-resistant flooring, was showcased as an example of how integrated systems can ensure both long-term durability and aesthetic quality.

Chen Lee Siong, General Manager of TU Business at Nippon Paint, concluded by highlighting the need for continuous learning and adaptation in the construction industry to meet evolving challenges and ensure the sustainability and resilience of future projects.
