The Malaysian Research Accelerator for Technology & Innovation (MRANTI) has concluded its 2024 Global Accelerator Programme (GAP) with a successful Sharing Day event. Showcasing 20 innovative companies, this gathering highlighted transformative solutions addressing urgent global challenges.
With a “Tech for Impact” theme, GAP 2024 curated local and international companies to focus on three areas aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs): Food Security & Sustainability (UN SDG 2), Healthcare (UN SDG 3), and Renewable Energy (UN SDG 7). These sectors were selected based on pressing issues identified both nationally and globally.
The GAP initiative supports these companies through access to funding from global and local investors and strategic assistance from R&D and business management entities. MRANTI GAP further amplifies this by connecting participants with industry partners, mentors, and entry into a global entrepreneurial network.
An exclusive private dinner was held in conjunction with Sharing Day, featuring angel investors, high-net-worth individuals, and influential business founders. Organised in partnership with the Malaysian Business Angel Network (MBAN), this event facilitated valuable connections, fostering collaboration and funding opportunities within Malaysia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Esteemed guests included Prof. Dr. Rofina Yasmin binti Othman, alongside industry leaders and investors.
Twenty companies formed this year’s 8th cohort: 6 focused on Food Security, 8 on Healthcare, 4 on Renewable Energy, and 2 on Sustainable Production.
“Malaysia has immense potential to become a global innovation hub,” said Safuan Zairi, Chief Ecosystem Officer, MRANTI. “MRANTI GAP has established itself as one of the most successful accelerator programmes, and we are committed to driving innovations forward to make real-world impact.”
Peter Wee, President of MBAN, echoed this sentiment, stating, “This programme builds confidence not only for startups but also for investors. By fostering mutual trust, we strengthen Malaysia’s innovation ecosystem.”
Holistic Approach to Entrepreneurship
GAP was created to support companies from ideation to globalisation, with a comprehensive approach that includes financial backing, mentorship, networking, and strategic support.
A significant addition to the 2024 cycle was MRANTI’s collaboration with the Asia School of Business (ASB), offering participating companies a chance to be nominated for The Earthshot Prize, a global sustainability award founded by His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales.
Throughout the intensive eight-week programme, companies attended masterclasses, mentorship sessions, and industry engagements, culminating in a Demo Day where they pitched their solutions to investors and industry leaders.
To date, MRANTI’s GAP has supported 58 companies, generating RM67.28 million in combined revenue and investment, underscoring the programme’s role in cultivating entrepreneurial talent and contributing to economic growth.
