The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), under the Ministry of Digital, has launched an initiative to accelerate the digital transformation of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) nationwide, beginning in Penang this week.

Announced yesterday by Minister of Digital Gobind Singh Deo, the initiative aims to empower SMEs with tools, knowledge, and support to embrace digitalisation and thrive in the digital economy.

A key feature of the programme is an engagement session with Penang-based SME associations at the newly established Zon Utara Office of the Ministry of Digital in George Town.

The programme addresses industry-specific challenges faced by SMEs in adopting and scaling digital transformation. It seeks to co-develop actionable solutions with stakeholders, foster a supportive ecosystem for digital enterprises, and facilitate dialogue sessions to share best practices and insights.

Additionally, it aims to nurture partnerships that accelerate digital adoption and innovation for the benefit of the SME community.

In his address, MDEC CEO Anuar Fariz Fadzil encouraged SMEs to view technology as a critical investment for growth, competitiveness, and future-proofing.

“Technology is a necessity in today’s rapidly evolving landscape. By adopting digital tools and innovative solutions, SMEs can improve efficiency, expand their reach, and strengthen their resilience in the global market while achieving greater productivity and operational efficiencies,” Anuar said.

“At MDEC, we are committed to providing SMEs with practical digital solutions to enhance their competitiveness,” he added.

This programme highlights the Ministry’s and MDEC’s dedication to fostering a thriving digital economy for the benefit of businesses and the rakyat. In Penang alone, RM30.96 million has been awarded to Malaysia Digital (MD) grant recipients, with 173 companies achieving MD status.

“We are eager to welcome more companies to achieve MD status, fostering greater innovation and creating a pathway for growth and competitiveness,” said Anuar.

MD status supports businesses in digital and technological activities by offering tax incentives, grants, funding opportunities, business matching, and access to networks.

To encourage more companies to attain MD status, the Ministry will soon unveil an initiative designed to help SMEs enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs by up to 20% through customised digital solutions tailored to their business needs.

“It’s about understanding their challenges and providing targeted solutions that align with their goals and industry demands,” said Anuar.

The event was attended by Penang Deputy Chief Minister II Jagdeep Singh Deo, CEO of Digital Penang Kwang Ming Ng, and industry leaders from Penang SME associations.
