Malaysia can become a developed nation by 2018 and does not have to wait until 2020, said Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, who is Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department. Nor Mohamed attributed this to the country’s strong gross domestic product (GDP) growth, reports BERNAMA.
According to him, the country until last year had been recording between five and 5.3 per cent growth every year.
Said Nor Mohamed, “We had expected to achieve developed nation status by 2020 but due to the efforts of the federal government, we can achieve it early. This is because the nation’s per capita income has been increasing every year,” at a media briefing after the Penang Federal Action Council meeting.
Nor Mohamed, who is member of the Parliament for Tasek Gelugor, said only the Barisan Nasional government could bring development and economic growth.
