The Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Amazon have announced a strategic partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing the export capabilities of SMEs in Malaysia.
This collaboration marks a significant step towards supporting Malaysian businesses in accessing global markets and expanding their international presence.
The MoU will see both MATRADE and Amazon working together to launch the “Go Global with Amazon and MATRADE” initiative. This program is designed to help Malaysian brand owners and sellers tap into cross-border business opportunities by leveraging Amazon Global Selling.
Amazon Global Selling assists businesses from around the world in launching and growing international brands, providing access to hundreds of millions of active customer accounts worldwide.
As part of this initiative, MATRADE and Amazon will focus on raising awareness and providing essential knowledge about cross-border e-commerce to Malaysian brand owners and sellers.
Amazon Global Selling will play a pivotal role by sharing valuable insights and expertise, conducting training workshops, and guiding businesses through the comprehensive Amazon seller journey. This journey includes critical steps such as account registration, product preparation, listing, shipping, advertising, and more.
Inspiring Local Businesses
A key aspect of the collaboration is showcasing success stories of Malaysian-based sellers who have successfully expanded their businesses overseas on Amazon platforms, particularly in the U.S. and EU markets.
These success stories will serve as inspiration and motivation for other local small business owners to embark on their own cross-border ventures with Amazon Global Selling.
Additionally, MATRADE will support and promote Amazon Global Selling’s training activities to relevant local entities, including businesses, authorities, and business associations, to foster greater participation and engagement.
The MoU signifies a strengthening of the collaboration between MATRADE and Amazon, which initially began in 2021. The latest joint initiative took place in April 2024 in Kuala Lumpur, featuring an in-person seller workshop that attracted strong participation from Malaysian sellers. This ongoing partnership is set to open new opportunities for both parties to work together in empowering Malaysian SMEs.
“We are thrilled to partner with Amazon in our efforts to empower Malaysian SMEs in international markets,” said Dato’ Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, MATRADE Chairman, who witnessed the MoU exchange.
“This MoU highlights our commitment to helping them leverage e-commerce to expand their global footprint. Together with Amazon, we aim to provide Malaysian SMEs with the essential tools, knowledge, and support to succeed in today’s competitive global marketplace.”
Anand Palit, Head of Amazon Global Selling in Southeast Asia, said: “We are excited to strengthen our collaboration with MATRADE to empower Malaysian SMEs to leverage Amazon’s global reach.
“We are observing a growing interest from Malaysian sellers to sell overseas with Amazon. In fact, the number of new Malaysian sellers selling their products overseas through Amazon Global Selling nearly doubled in the January-April 2024 period compared to the same period the year before.
“The MoU with MATRADE will provide Malaysian brand owners with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to seize cross-border business opportunities as Amazon sellers.”
