Exabytes is launching a cybersecurity awareness campaign dubbed as #DetectToProtect, to increase the awareness regarding cyber security and the consequences of underestimating its dangers.

Targetting the SMEs, the campaign aims to educate on the importance of making preparations in case of the worst for the sake of protecting their sensitive data.

“Despite the timeless adage: ‘It’s better to be safe than sorry’ or ‘expect the best, prepare for the worst’, companies and business owners tend to disregard the significance of having the right type of protection for both your software and hardware, until an unfortunate event happens.

“We need to avoid having this mindset as cyber attacks can happen when you least expect it, and you may not even be aware of it before it’s too late,” cautioned Kevin Foo, Head of Cybersecurity of Exabytes.

Kevin also explained how given the size and financial constraints, small businesses are the most exposed to cyber attacks, especially within the ASEAN region. Coupled with the lack of knowledge and training when it comes to cyber security, SMEs tend to be among the preferred targets for cyber attacks.

In fact, reports of cyber attacks continue to plague the news. Globally, 97% of people around the world cannot identify a phishing email and 1 out of 25 of those people tend to click those dangerous emails, providing a window for malware to sneak into the victim’s hardware.

As cyber attacks become more sophisticated, malware is getting harder to detect and fix, with 70% of fraudulent transactions coming from mobile platforms.

Regionally, 65% of organisations in Singapore experienced at least 6 cyber attacks within last year alone, while Indonesia experienced a 143% increase in data leakage cases during the second quarter of 2022, ranking the country as the second most vulnerable country in the world when it comes to cyber attacks.

In terms of industries, businesses in the computer and IT industry have shown the highest number of cyber attacks being reported (85%), especially for companies that would consider adopting the work-from-home concept. The medical and health industry have also been experiencing an increase in the number of cyber attacks (73%) in recent years, closely followed by the accountancy, banking and finance industry (67%).

However, rather than waiting to be attacked before taking action, Kevin said, “It is always better to prevent than to cure – and that is exactly what Exabytes’ multi-layered solution can do.”

To further spread knowledgeable insights around the matter in conjunction with Cyber Security Awareness Month, Exabytes will be organising a ‘Cyber Security Awareness for Business’ webinar on October 11th, 2022, from 10.00 am to 11.30 am.
