Dewan Rakyat condemns NZ mosque attacks
The Dewan Rakyat today strongly condemned the terrorist attacks on two mosques in New Zealand last Friday and expressed condolences to the families of the 50 people killed in the massacre. Speaker Datuk Mohamad Ariff Yusof made the statement after a debate on the motion to condemn the attacks tabled by Port Dickson MP Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Datuk Mohamad Ariff called on all Muslim MPs to recite the Al-Fatihah and the non-Muslim MPs to observe a minute’s silence as a mark of respect for the dead. “The Malaysian Parliament stands together with the Government and Parliament of New Zealand in rejecting terrorism, hatred and violence in all forms,” he said.
In the Netherlands, a gunman opened fire on a tram in the Dutch city of Utrecht today, killing at least one person and wounding several in what officials said was a possible terrorist incident. A body covered in a sheet was reportedly seen on the tracks as armed police and emergency services swarmed around the scene in one of the largest cities in the Netherlands. Police said the attacker is still on the run. Schools in the city have been ordered to close, as authorities raised the terrorism threat to its highest level in Utrecht province. The Netherlands has boosted security at airports and other key buildings, said Dutch military police. Security was also stepped up at mosques.
Police arrest nine men over dumping of chemical waste into Pasir Gudang river
The police have arrested nine men, two of them in Johor and seven outside the state, to assist in the investigation into the dumping of chemical waste in a river in Pasir Gudang. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police had applied to the court to have the men remanded for six days from today to help the police in the probe. He said the investigation will be conducted under Section 278 of the Penal Code for making the atmosphere noxious to health, under Section 284 of the Penal Code for negligent conduct with respect to any poisonous substance and under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means. The dumping of chemical wastes in Sungai Kim Kim in Pasir Gudang was realised on March 7 when many students, teachers and staff of schools near the river suffered breathing difficulty, vomiting, nausea and sore throat after inadvertently inhaling toxic fumes emanating from the effluents. On March 13, the Education Ministry ordered all the 111 schools in Pasir Gudang to close after many more people suffered what has come to be called the ‘Kim Kim Symptoms’.
Melaka records investments worth RM3.25 bln in 2018
Melaka has received RM3.25 billion in investments last year, the seventh highest nationwide. Chief Minister Adly Zahari said data from the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) reported that RM2.48 billion were local investments and the remaining RM773.1 million were foreign. Adly said with an average annual investment target of RM5 billion, the state government would continue to promote Melaka as a prime investment destination in the region through the high technology, halal products, automotive, renewable (energy) technology, electrical and electronics, and aerospace sectors.
